WEATHER forecasters are warning people in the Tyne Valley to 'be prepared' as a weather warning has been upgraded.

The Met Office initially issued a yellow weather warning for Storm Ali, but it has now been upgraded to an amber warning.

Heavy winds will see gusts of up to 75 mph inland, with those on high ground warned that, in exposed locations, gusts of up to 80mph could be possible.

There is a possible danger to life from flying debris, the Met Office said.

Meanwhile some damage to buildings is said to be likely, such as tiles blown from roofs or damage through falling trees and branches breaking.

People who are travelling are being told to expect longer journey times and cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services may affected with some roads and bridges closed.

Chief forecaster Laura Paterson said: "As this is the first spell of very strong winds of the season, and given that most trees are still in full leaf, we are likely to see some dangerous conditions with falling trees and flying branches and other debris likely. Strong winds will be accompanied by heavy, squally showers.”
