PREPARATIONS to welcome the Prince of Wales have ramped up ahead of his arrival.

A large police presence, including police dogs and specialist search teams, descended on Hexham Town Centre on Wednesday morning ahead of Prince Charles’ visit to the district.

The heir to the throne will begin his first visit to the Tyne Valley since 2016 with a trip to the flagship tourist attraction The Sill, which attracted more than 170,000 visitors in its first year.

He is then due to arrive in Hexham early in the afternoon to tour the Abbey, before making the short journey to the Market Place where a special market showcasing products from across Northumberland will be held.

Next stop on his tour will be Kirkharle Courtyard to view the Capability Brown landscape garden area, as well as meeting with local businesses.

The last stop of the day before he heads into North Northumberland on Thursday will be the newly opened Kielder Salmon Centre and Hatchery.
