POLICE on patrol in Hexham on Sunday night had a rather unusual traffic incident to deal with.

Officers stopped a man driving a horse and trap on Battle Hill, after they received reports that he was intoxicated.

After being questioned by police, the driver led the horse and trap up Eastgate on foot, escorted by two police cars.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “At around 8.31pm on September 2, we received a report of an intoxicated man in charge of a horse in Hexham.

“Officers located the man nearby and called for a suitable driver to take the horse and cart away.

“The man was spoken to by officers and reported for traffic offences.”

It is not yet known whether the man will be charged.
