A MODERN-DAY wordsmith, Joe Allan is king of the juxtaposition.

While the music of exciting four piece A Festival, A Parade (in fact the band’s name itself) suggests an upbeat tone, his bleak and at times morbid lyrics set them apart from the rest of the pack.

A lyrical wizard, he conjures up rhymes you would have thought could never connect and lines which flow seamlessly.

The name of debut EP is a prime example, A Piece of Meat, An Irregular Heartbeat, grabs the attention immediately and awakens all senses of curiosity.

The songwriting throughout the three tracks is nothing short of phenomenal and justifies the many songwriting awards he has won in the past.

Add this to the fact he is also a brilliant singer and guitar player, and you’ve got yourself the complete package there.

He may be the main ingredient in the AFAP mix, but the extra contributions from the other three band members cooks up the perfect combination that leaves the listener hungry for more.

The guitar work from Reece Spencer is of the highest quality, and his explosive solos flow the music on.

Chollerford’s own Ollie Winn provides the perfect balance on bass guitar, with drummer Liam Tellum flawless throughout.

The EP offering justifies the band’s tag as one of the most promising things coming out of the North-East – all three tracks are absolute blinders.

Track number three, An Opinionless Witness, has gained airplay on the likes of BBC Newcastle, but it is certainly only a matter of time before it is picked up further afield.

It gets off to a good start with Where’s the Treasure?, and keeps cranking up with I’ve Made My Peace With it All and then that fantastic finale.
