LIKE many former mining communities, Haltwhistle was always a hotbed of local footballing talent.

It had one of the best Saturday teams in the region in Hadrian Paints, which was sponsored by the local Smith and Walton paint factory, with its pitch in the shadow of the factory.

Hadrian, and its successor Crown Paints, enjoyed great success in regional leagues, but alas, the team’s pitch was sacrificed to allow the construction of the Haltwhistle bypass.

The team decamped to Wark during the construction period, but the team gradually broke up, and the pitch was never replaced when work was complete.

The picture shows the team at its height, with some of the best known faces in local football on show. Who can name them all?
