Kathryn Tickell is an acclaimed player of the Northumbrian pipes, and is thought of as being amongst the best exponents of the instrument in the world.
She was commended for her contribution to music at a Durham University degree ceremony on January 12, where she was made an Honorary Master of Music. She was handed the award by world-famous opera singer and chancellor of Durham University, Sir Thomas Allen.
The performer, composer and talented piper is recognised for bringing the ancient music of Northumberland into modern music circles, and for helping to bring music to people across the region.
She founded The Young Musicians Fund, which has raised £100,000 to allow young people to realise their potential, and also initiated the Festival for the North-East.
