WORLD champion and Olympic medallist Steve Cram has shown his support for one of the district’s top visitor locations.

The world famous runner is the latest celebrity to show his support for Kielder Water and Forest Park Development Trust’s Friends scheme which was launched last year to help protect and develop the facilities there.

Cram, who has hosted the annual Kielder Marathon weekend since 2010, explained why the area is so close to his heart.

He said: “Becoming a Friend of Kielder Water and Forest Park is a fantastic opportunity for me to share my passion for Kielder.

“The park has always been my favourite place in the world to run and cycle.

“It’s right on my doorstep and it continues to be the perfect stage for the most beautiful running event in the country, Kielder Marathon.

“Thanks to its spectacular Northumberland setting, it’s no surprise the popularity of the sporting weekend grows year on year, including the addition of the new half marathon this year, and it’s important we look after this special location.”

Since the launch of the scheme, the development trust has worked with partners to progress plans to expand Kielder Observatory and to develop wildlife in the area.

Cram joins TV architect George Clarke and football legend Jack Charlton as celebrity ‘friends’ of Kielder Water and Forest.
