THE success of Whitley Chapel Young Farmers in the national tug o’ war competition has put the spotlight firmly on one of the few sports you win going backwards.
We think this picture was taken at Gilsland Show in the mid-1970s, and while we cannot identify the team which appears to have carried off most of the trophies, we do know who the men at either end of the line up are.
On the left is former Hexham Courant editor and secretary of Tynedale Sports Council Mike Sharman, who presented the trophies on the day, while on the right is former headmaster of Haydon Bridge Technical School, chairman of Tynedale Council, and chairman of the sports council Edward Waite.
Can anyone name more names?
