S UNDERLAND’S FA Cup hero goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery will be among the hundreds expected at the inaugural Bob Stokoe Shield, in Prudhoe.

Monty pulled off a remarkable double save during Sunderland’s most famous victory, the Division Two side holding on to record a 1-0 victory against Leeds United from the division above in the final of the FA Cup in 1973.

That day, Mickley-born Bob Stokoe was the manager who led Montgomery and his teammates to the club’s only post-war major trophy, and he became such a hero that a statue of him, complete with his famous trilby hat and Mackintosh jacket, takes pride of place outside Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

To celebrate the area’s most famous sporting son, Stokoe also won the FA Cup as a player with Newcastle United, a fund-raising game between Sunderland’s U23 team and players across Prudhoe Town’s senior teams will take place tonight.

While a big crowd is expected for the friendly match at Prudhoe’s Kimberly Park stadium in Broomhouse Road, Montgomery has confirmed his attendance alongside Sunderland legend Kevin Ball, the club’s current senior professional development coach.

Stokoe’s daughter, Karen Craven, will be on hand to present the trophy to the victorious team.

The evening has been arranged to raise funds for Ferndene, a learning disability and mental health care hospital for children based in Prudhoe, and will include entertainment involving local children.

Members of Sunderland’s U12 development team from the Tynedale area, who are coached in Ferndene’s indoor sports hall on a weekly basis, will act as ball boys on the evening.

Gates open at 5.30pm, with the game kicking off at 6.30pm.

Tickets, priced a £3 for adults and £1 for children, are available from Ferndene, Prudhoe Town Community Centre and the Spetchells Centre. Alternatively, they can be purchased online www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bob-stokoe-shield-football-fundraiser-tickets-33890850446.
