A NEW arts award has been launched to nurture the talent of young sculptors.

The Gillian Dickinson Trust has launched the Gillian Dickinson North-East Young Sculptor of the Year award in conjunction with Cheeseburn Sculpture, which is based at Cheeseburn Grange, near Stamfordham.

Founder of the latter, Joanna Riddell, said: “With the award, we hope to encourage new talent and support the early careers of young regional artists and designers.”

Applicants between the ages of 18 and 25 are being invited to submit their designs for a piece of sculpture.

Ten of them will then be shortlisted and given £300 each to work their plans up into more detailed models, which will be exhibited at Cheeseburn.

The prize for the outright winner will be a commission valued at £5,000 to produce the sculpture and a prominent spot in the Cheeseburn gardens in which to display it.
