ON Friday, Hexham & Northern Marts held their third special sale of store cattle and suckled calves and offered for sale a good catalogued entry of 621 head. The sale was topped by a premier Charolais cross bred steer at 16 months from James Herdman, Edlingham Newtown, Alnwick which saw animated bidding round the full ringside to settle at £1365 to Declan Foley. This was one of a fantastic run of twenty two steers brought south from the north Northumberland parish as part of the annual consignment from Mr Herdman which averaged a hefty £1192 and found new homes in Northumberland, Yorkshire, Durham & Derbyshire. Stuart Buchannan brought forward the second draw from the herd of his employers Messrs Watmore at Holystone Estate and these well-bred and sizeable Angus cross bullocks peaked at £1355 with the run of 19 averaging the same £1192 figure as the aforementioned Charolais cattle surely proving that Hexham is the leading centre for the sale of both continental and native breed store cattle in the North of England. Testament to the quality of these Angus steers the entire run were purchased by only two regular and respected purchasers of Hexham cattle and noted Angus finishers; John Dodd, Saugh House and Les Oliver, Haswell Moor.

LAST Thursday, Hexham & Northern Marts held their traditional ‘Bellingham’ prize show and sale of spring born suckler bred calves and offered for sale a superb entry of 1223 head. Prior to the sale the show was sponsored by Zoetis Animal Health, Carrs Billington, John Warren ABP & The Limousin Cattle Society and was expertly judged by Mr Bill Danson & Mr Jim Bailey on behalf of The Hind Quarter top quality butchers, Knott end on Sea, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire.

A tremendous show of over 30 head of calves were put before the judges and from the initial group and individual classes Messrs Danson & Bailey put forward their first prize Limousin cross bred heifer as their Overall Champion. The red heifer was a first class example of cross bred genetics and a real credit to breeder and exhibitor Daniel Kemp, Keepwick Farm, Humshaugh, Hexham having been bred from a Blue cross cow and sired by a Willie Barron bred pedigree Limousin bull; Barrons Gizmo, 2011 born going back to Ampertaine Commander. The heifer looked every inch the champion as she entered the ring at 12 noon and was the subject of some intense and spirited bidding which saw her eventually go home with the judges changing hands for £1980; a handsome price for a six month old heifer calf.

True to type and with a definite leaning towards the best end of calves ideally suited to a butchers trade the judges awarded the reserve champion rosette to the second prize Limousin cross heifer from Messrs J Lee & Sons, Morley Hill, Whitfield. This one again with style and shape also attracted fierce interest and quickly rattled up to £1350 and was purchased by Messrs Gibson, High Etherley, Bishop Auckland.

With the show concluded, the sale began and buyer caution at the ringside that had been seen at other, earlier sales in the region was mirrored here also.
