ON Tuesday, at Hexham Auction Mart, there was small show of both clean cattle and geld cows forward.

Topping the sale was a superb Limousin x heifer consigned by M/s G Carins & Ptns, Broomhall, realising 230.5ppk. Top grossing heifer was from the same consignor realising £1304 per head.

ON Friday, Hexham & Northern marts, at their weekly store sale, sold an entry of 110 cattle and with a mixed show presented all classes were considerably dearer on the week. In a seldom seen occurrence at this centre the sale was topped by a young bull; a pure bred Limousin from John Carruthers, The Silloans, Rochester, which realised £1230. The same vendor also sold a super cross bred black steer to £1180 and Andrew Ellis, Thrunton Lowfield sold a hefty Charolais steer to the same figure, both bullocks aged 14 months. With buyers a plenty at the ringside the auctioneers urge any potential customers that may be contemplating marketing any cattle in the next few weeks to contact the offices at Hexham to take advantage of these great rates.

LAST Wednesday, Scots Gap Auction Mart sold 640 prime lambs and cast sheep at their weekly sale. In line with other regional centres trades earlier in the week, the sale returned an average of £80.21 for 43kg and a SQQ figure of 188.9ppkg. The sale peaked at £96 for heavy Texel lambs from Peter Gordon, Old Deanham, followed by others at £94 from Ian Scott & Sons, Corneyside. Well bred Beltex cross lambs from Richard Thornton, Cornhills, sold to 210ppkg and 207ppkg whilst Don Ions, Ewesley sold a pen of handy weighted Texel crosses at 205ppkg. Cast sheep sold to £116 for a Texel Ram and £92 for Texel cross ewes both from Sheila and William Walton, Ogle Castle.
