A small offering of prime cattle on show sold to extreme rates. Topping the sale firstly was a fantastic home bred Blonde x heifer consigned by local vendor J Gibb, Jubilee Buildings, Broomley realising 220.5ppk and £1243 per head and secondly by a shapely black Limousin x heifer consigned by regular vendor’s M/s G Carins & Ptns, Broomhall Farm again realising 220.5ppk and £1234 per head. An overall sale average of 216.7ppk and £1201.63.

ON Friday, Hexham Mart sold 241 store cattle at their weekly sale and recent rates were maintained for all classes. Messrs Whitfield, Berry Edge led the sale with a big square Limousin steer at £1370 and Messrs Milburn, Holling Hill followed at £1340 for a similar beast. Fred Murray, Wrangham East, sold a smart and shapely steer at just 16 months of age which realised £1330 and Messrs Whitfield peaked the heifer trade at £1280 for a big Limmy lady. Michael Dixon, The Stobbs, brought forward another nice run of Angus cross calves and saw a fruitful trade at £1160 for steer and £1120 for heifers at 14 months.

LAST Wednesday, Scots Gap Mart sold 680 prime lambs and cast sheep at their weekly sale. In line with other centres trade was slightly easier and levelled at 171ppkg/ £73.77 per head. The sale peaked at £90 for heavy Texels from Jonta Walton, Grangemoor, and smart sorts from John Goodfellow, Longwitton, sold to 210ppkg. Cast sheep peaked at £80 for a Texel ram from the same home and also for ewes from William Hall, New Houses Hallington.
