ON Friday Hexham and Northern Marts had forward an entry of 824 catalogued head of store cattle and suckled calves, which included over 120 native breed cattle for the special monthly sale of such beast, as well as a great entry of 362 spring-born suckled calves, referred to traditionally as the second “Bellingham” sale for such younger types.

With a good number of older sorts forward to start the sale there was a full complement of buyers at the ringside and the best of these types were still in demand.

However, with the majority of better quality cattle now having changed hands, the secondary types, perhaps showing signs of recent inclement weather, were harder to place.

The sale leader was a great Limousin steer at 22 months from Mrs Allgood, of Nunwick, which rang the bell at £1,330, selling to Robert Nicholson, of Barnsley, for his Cannon Hall Farm Shop operation.

Next in the rankings was a super Charolais x steer at 18 months from John Sinton, of White House, which realised £1,310 to Declan Foley.

The same purchaser also paid the top price for a heifer on the day which was a great black Limousin x lady that would easily fulfil either purpose and sold for a newsworthy £1,280.

The best of the native breed entry was a pair of big black Angus x steers at 18 months from Martin Johnson, of High Fotherley, which sold well at £1,285 to John Dodd, of Saugh House.

A great run of ten steers, bred the sale way and at the same age, sold to a top of £1,185 to then average £1,126 for noted local purveyor of Angus x cattle, Geoff Roddam, of Blackcarts.

Although latterly spring-born calves sold elsewhere have struggled to maintain the levels set in October, a good return crowd came forward for the top quality suckler bred calves, many from the high hills of Northumberland and County Durham, which made up the second “Bellingham” sale.

These young calves were fiercely contested and were led by a super Limousin x heifer at just six months of age from Eric Armstrong, of Harlow Bower, which sold for £990 to Michael Pickworth, of Dotland Park.

The dearest steers on the day were a pair of well-bred Charolais crosses from Robin Oxley, of Colwell Hill, Elsdon, which at eight months sold for the same price to Steven Dale, of York.

Amongst numerous highlights were a super pair of red heifers from Robert Stephenson, of West Mill Hills, which at a well-grown four months of age returned £200 per month since birth selling for £800 to Messrs Harker, of Yarm.

The entire entry of suckled calves under nine months of age saw two-thirds of the entry as steers sell to average £791 and the remaining heifer calves level at £701.

Entries and enquiries for all types of cattle would be welcomed by our auctioneers for vendors to benefit from the advantageous rates seen at this centre on a weekly basis.
