FORMER Environment Secretary Owen Paterson will take part in a debate over land ownership and wildlife in Yorkshire later this month.

The current MP for North Shropshire will be joined by naturalist Mark Avery, farmer and landowner Philip Merricks, and Ian Coghill, chairman of the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust.

The debate will take place on Friday July 31, at Harewood House near Leeds.

Tim Breitmeyer, vice-chairman of the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), which is organising the event, said: “This comes at a time of heated debate over the proposed re-wilding of a number of species and when public interest in conservation of wildlife is high.

“Protecting and conserving the countryside is a high priority for many landowners and farmers but they come under constant fire from various conservationist groups, and at times from government.
