THE names of some of those who will be taking to the podium for this year’s Northern Farming Conference have been confirmed.

Brandishing the theme “Farming: Where I see my future”, the conference due to take place at Hexham Mart on Wednesday, November 9, is attracting leading farmers from all over the country.

Its aim is to examine what the future might hold for the industry in the wake of the vote to leave the European Union.

Sir Peter Kendall will be one of the speakers. Chairman of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board and a past president of the NFU, he farms in Eyeworth, East Bedfordshire, with his brother, Richard. They grow more than 600 hectares of combinable crops on their own farm and hold contracting and rental agreements with another four farmers.

He will be joined by the president of the CLA, Ross Murray.

A trustee of Llanover and Coldbrook Estates, in Monmouthshire, he has been a chartered surveyor responsible for managing both urban and rural estates in South Wales since 1991.

Speakers previously announced include former Farmers’ Weekly Dairy Farmer of the Year and Nuffield Scholar, Robert Craig; AHDB Monitor Farmer for York and precision farming specialist, David Blacker; the founder of Cornhill on Tweed’s Carroll’s Heritage Potatoes, Anthony Carroll;and Wagyu beef producer James Thornton.

Conference chairman Andrew Robinson said: “Following the vote to leave Europe, there is a huge amount of uncertainty within the agricultural sector and this conference will be a rare opportunity to hear leading industry figures and farmers discuss the key issues facing agriculture.”
