A HALTWHISTLE teenager is already proving his worth in the Royal Navy.
Engineering technician Thomas Wilkie has graduated as a weapons engineer with HMS Collingwood, at Fareham, in Hampshire, during his second phase of training with Victory Squadron.
The 19-year-old former Haydon Bridge High School pupil only signed up in February, but is already making big strides.
He has already represented HMS Collingwood in sporting events, and has worked with specialists in various fields within the Royal Navy.
Thomas said: “I have enjoyed my time in the Royal Navy so far and I’m looking forward to what the future holds.”
At HMS Collingwood, Thomas undertook the weapons engineering training course, during which he learned about the Royal Navy’s weapon systems, safety procedures, electrical and electronic repair techniques, and the basics of hydraulics and pneumatics.
Now he is preparing to work alongside marine, warfare and logistics specialists, as well as experts in communications, IT, explosives, and electronic sensor systems.
He will also learn how to prioritise and manage his work to achieve his ship’s mission, and ensure its fighting capabilities.
