Walwick Hall, near Humshaugh, was awarded the building conservation accolade at the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) regional awards.
Ideally placed along Hadrian’s Wall, Walwick Hall had fallen into poor condition, suffering badly from a lack of maintenance.
An 18-month upgrade project to bring the building back into a viable and sustainable use, was praised by the judges for securing its long-term future and creating a thriving business that created local jobs, supported local suppliers and boosted tourism.
Chairman of the judging panel Adam Serfontein, managing director at The Hanro Group said: “These exemplary schemes are already having a positive impact on their local communities and are actively helping to ensure the North- East is one of the most vibrant regions to live, work and visit.”
The winners will go on to compete in the national final in London on November 2.
