A NEW convenience store has opened in premises which once specialised in music and film.

Battle Hill Convenience Store began serving customers in Hexham town centre last Friday.

Businessman Mojtaba Rezaie has taken over the lease for the premises previously occupied by Gojo for 30 years.

Mr Rezaie, who also runs the neighbouring Oven & Grill takeaway, says the new venture is to cater for local people seeking a few bits and pieces, rather than a big weekly shop.

He said: “Having worked in Hexham for two years with the Oven & Grill, I became aware of the need for a convenience store such as this.

“There are a lot of older people who don’t want to walk to the supermarkets out of the town centre, and lots of busy people who just want to do a little shop.”

Iranian national Mr Rezaie moved to England 20 years ago, and has previously run businesses in Newcastle.

He hopes to move from his current home in Gateshead to Hexham, so he can be closer to his two shops in the town.

Mr Rezaie employs four part-time staff and one full-time employee at the convenience store. He hopes to eventually launch a delivery service for elderly customers who require it.

l Gojo, run by brothers Andrew and Steven Jackson, moved out of the premises late last year, after being taken over by Core Music, on Gilesgate.
