AFTER more than a decade at the helm of a popular Corbridge business, this mother and daughter team have plenty to celebrate.

Having made it through a winter fraught with the devastation caused by Storm Desmond, Lynn and Faye Clark, of Finale, are just one of the many independent shops in Corbridge keen to remind people that the village is open for business as they mark an anniversary.

“We’re so lucky to be here in Corbridge, which is vibrant and has a whole host of independent shops and cafes, and a very active traders’ association,” said Lynn (61), who fulfilled a long-held ambition to run her own business when she bought the ladies’ shoes and accessories shop on Middle Street back in April 2005.

“We’re very proud to be still going strong after what has been a challenging few years for people up and down the country.

“But certainly, after the floods, I think the message is taking a while to get out that we’re here and we’re thriving.

“I had a call from a lady about six weeks ago asking whether she was able to get into Corbridge.”

Well over 40 homes and businesses along the River Tyne, including those on Station Road, The Stanners and Well Bank, were flooded on December 5 – but the village centre was unaffected.

“We’re very fortunate that we not only serve the local area, but people travel quite a long way to see us,” said Faye (36) who gave up her career as a probation officer four years ago to join her mum in the business.

“We have a good tourist trade; there was a lady in the other day from the Isle of Skye. And people regularly come from Carlisle, Durham and the surrounding areas.”

The attraction for customers, no doubt, is finding over 250 different styles sourced from 30 different suppliers around the world, including Italy, Austria, Germany and Spain.

“I have a real passion for what I do and buy with my gut when I see something I like,” said Lynn. “We’ve really worked on expanding the range of what we offer and I think people appreciate that.”

Meanwhile, using Faye’s IT skills, the pair have improved the Finale website and built a presence on social media.

Day to day, four part-time members of staff help run the shop.

Lynn added: “We have a fantastic team who offer a personal service and I’d like to think that sets us apart.”
