CONCERN has been raised that youngsters in Prudhoe are being exploited by apprenticeship schemes.

The issue was discussed by councillors at the annual meeting of Prudhoe Town Council.

A report from a meeting of the Prudhoe Town Council Young People’s Forum referred to issues facing young people in the town ‘including some exploitation with apprenticeships’.

Coun. Gerry Price said: “The information given at the young people’s forum meeting was that the concern was when the apprenticeship finished they would be given minimum wage, zero hours or nothing at all.”

Clearly perturbed by the matter, councillors were keen to learn more about the situation.

Coun. Jennifer McGee said: “I am concerned. I would like to find out a bit more about that because it’s quite a strong thing to say.

“I did have a word with someone and I think some of the young people aren’t happy with the way they’re being treated.”

“I would hate to think that young people were being exploited and if at the end of an apprenticeship they’re hoping for a job and there’s nothing – that’s not good.”

It was agreed that more information was needed about which apprenticeships were referred to and how often the problems may occur.
