A LEGAL firm with five offices across Cumbria and Northumberland has expanded its presence in the centre of Haltwhistle.

Cartmell Shepherd has taken over the the former Cumberland Building Society premises on Main Street after previously occupying only the first floor.

“It means we now have a proper reception and waiting room, as well as an accessible meeting room, which is more convenient for all customers and essential for those with disabilities,” said Emma Smith, the legal firm’s marketing manager.

A significant investment has seen the ground floor refurbished with new decor and furniture – as well as avoiding the presence of an empty shop window on the Main Street.

“I think it demonstrates our commitment to our clients in Haltwhistle and beyond,” added Emma.

The building society can now be found in new premises across the road and bosses at Cartmell Shepherd have taken the opportunity to expand the team.

Joining director Diana Armstrong, associate solicitor Miya Mark and secretaries Kathleen Thompson and Susan Tweddle is new addition Caroline Clayton-Ridley.

Specialising in residential conveyancing, Caroline joined the team in time for the official re-opening of the newly-refurbished Haltwhistle premises, which coincided with the town’s late night Christmas shopping evening on November 25.

Long-serving former secretary at the Haltwhistle branch, Ann Ogle, was invited to carry out an official ribbon cutting, while mulled wine, mince pies and other festive treats were served up to visitors.
