VILLAGERS in Corbridge are limbering up for a cricket competition which could win them a brand new Corbridge Charity Shield.

The silverware is being offered up to the winners of a match, which is expected to see teams from the village cricket club, local charities Corbridge Youth Initiative and the Charlotte Straker Project, and residents, go head-to-head, all in the name of fund-raising.

The game will be the centre piece of the first ever Corbridge Cricket Club family day, Funday on Sunday, which is set to take place on Sunday, August 30.

“We hope there‘ll be four teams competing,” said former village GP Bill Cunningham, who is chairman of trustees at Charlotte Straker.

“It’s another one of the ways the two charities have come up with of working together to raise funds.

“We‘re very grateful to the cricket club for their help and involvement.

“It will also give them a chance to show off the great facilities they have in the pavilion.”

For the event, the first ball will be bowled at the Stanners ground at around 12.30pm, with mini-cricket and fun cricket-themed challenges alongside the main match.

A barbecue and tea and cakes will be available for families alongside face painting, a tug o’ war, a tombola and a stall of handmade items by Charlotte Straker supporters, the Crafty Women.

Live music and a bar will keep people entertained while the presentation of the coveted shield will take place at 7pm.
